Ángel Parra, a renowned Chilean singer-songwriter and poet, was born in 1943 in Santiago, emerging as a pivotal figure in the Nueva Canción movement that fused folk traditions with social and political commentary during the turbulent mid-20th century. Exiled following the 1973 coup d'état, Parra's work often reflected themes of resistance, love, and cultural identity, drawing from his family's artistic legacy—his mother, Violeta Parra, being a foundational folk icon. His lyrics, infused with the rhythms of Andean and Chilean folk music, captured the struggles of the working class and the spirit of solidarity. Returning to Chile in the 1990s, Parra continued to perform and compose until his passing in 2017, leaving an indelible mark on Latin American music and literature.
