Anna Jacobson Schwartz was a pioneering economic historian whose meticulous research reshaped our understanding of monetary policy and financial crises. Born in 1915 in the Bronx, she earned her PhD from Columbia University and spent much of her career at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Collaborating with Nobel laureate Milton Friedman, Schwartz co-authored the seminal 'A Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960,' which argued that the Federal Reserve's failures exacerbated the Great Depression. Her work emphasized the critical role of money supply in economic stability, influencing generations of policymakers and scholars. Throughout her life, Schwartz received numerous accolades, including the National Medal of Science, and continued to produce insightful analyses until her passing in 2012, leaving an indelible mark on economic thought.
