About the Author

Bankimcandra Chatterji (1838-1894), one of the pioneers of modern Bengali literature, was a novelist, poet, and journalist whose works profoundly influenced the Indian nationalist movement and the Bengal Renaissance. Born in a village in West Bengal, he pursued a career in the colonial civil service while dedicating his literary talents to exploring themes of patriotism, social reform, and cultural identity. His novel Anandamath, or The Sacred Brotherhood, serialized in 1882, vividly depicts the Sannyasi Rebellion and introduced the iconic hymn 'Vande Mataram,' which later became a rallying cry for India's independence struggle. Chatterji's writings bridged traditional Indian ethos with Western literary forms, inspiring generations of writers and revolutionaries across the subcontinent.
