Baron Antoine-Henri De Jomini
About the Author
Baron Antoine-Henri de Jomini (1779–1869) was a Swiss military theorist and historian whose groundbreaking analyses of warfare profoundly influenced strategic thinking across Europe and beyond. Born in Switzerland, Jomini served in the French army during the Napoleonic Wars, rising to the rank of general and gaining intimate knowledge of large-scale campaigns. After defecting to Russia in 1813, he advised the Russian military and authored seminal works on military science. His emphasis on universal principles of strategy, such as lines of operation and bases of operations, bridged the gap between Enlightenment rationalism and 19th-century warfare. Jomini's writings, blending historical insight with practical doctrine, remain essential reading for military scholars and leaders, shaping modern concepts of operational art.
