Bernhard Kellermann
About the Author
Bernhard Kellermann (1879–1951) was a prolific German author and journalist whose works captured the raw intensity of early 20th-century Europe. Born in Fürth, Bavaria, he studied philosophy and literature before turning to writing, initially gaining acclaim for his science fiction novel The Tunnel (1913), which envisioned a transatlantic passage and influenced later dystopian narratives. Kellermann's experiences as a war correspondent during World War I profoundly shaped his perspective, leading to poignant accounts of the conflict's human toll. His reporting from the front lines, as detailed in The War in the West 1915: Reports from the Western Front (In the Trenches of WWI), offered unflinching insights into the trenches' horrors, blending vivid observation with a call for peace. Later in life, he embraced socialist ideals, writing essays and novels that critiqued fascism and championed humanism until his death in East Germany.
