Charles Alexander Eastman
About the Author
Charles Alexander Eastman, born Ohiyesa in 1858 to a Santee Sioux family in Minnesota, was a pioneering Native American physician, writer, and advocate whose life bridged traditional indigenous ways and modern American society. Orphaned young and raised by his uncle in the ways of the Dakota people, he later pursued Western education, earning a medical degree from Boston University in 1890. As one of the first Native Americans to practice medicine, Eastman worked with the Sioux on reservations and co-founded the Boy Scouts of America. His writings eloquently captured the clash and harmony between cultures, drawing from personal experiences to promote understanding and reform. Through works like From the Deep Woods to Civilization, he chronicled his remarkable journey from the wilderness to urban life, leaving a lasting legacy in Native American literature and activism until his death in 1939.
