Born in 1874 in Indiana, he earned his doctorate from Columbia University and became a prominent figure in early 20th-century academia, co-founding the New School for Social Research. Beard's work emphasized economic motivations in historical events, challenging traditional narratives of idealism. His seminal book, An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States, published in 1913, argued that the framers' self-interests drove the document's creation, sparking enduring debates in constitutional history.
