Colen Campbell (1676–1729) was a pioneering Scottish architect and influential author whose work profoundly shaped the Palladian revival in British architecture during the early 18th century. Trained in Italy, where he immersed himself in classical antiquity, Campbell returned to England to champion the principles of Vitruvius and the Renaissance masters, advocating for symmetry, proportion, and grandeur in design. His seminal publication, Vitruvius Britannicus: The Classic of Eighteenth-Century British Architecture, meticulously documented the finest country houses and public buildings of the era, serving as both a catalog of architectural excellence and a blueprint for future generations.
