Daoyuan
About the Author
Daoyuan, a revered Chan Buddhist monk of the Song Dynasty, is celebrated for his profound contributions to the preservation and dissemination of Zen teachings through meticulous historical records. Active in the early 11th century, he compiled the monumental 'Jingde Chuandeng Lu,' a comprehensive chronicle of the Chan lineage from its Indian origins to the Tang era, drawing on oral transmissions, public records, and enlightened dialogues. As a disciple within the Yunmen school, Daoyuan's work emphasizes the direct transmission of wisdom outside scriptures, capturing the essence of masters' lives, koans, and verse to guide practitioners toward awakening. His scholarly yet spiritually attuned approach has made his texts enduring cornerstones of Buddhist literature, influencing generations of meditators and scholars alike.
