About the Author

David Marr was a pioneering cognitive scientist and neuroscientist whose groundbreaking work revolutionized the understanding of human vision. Born in 1945 in England, Marr earned his PhD from the University of Cambridge and later joined the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, where he developed a computational framework for analyzing visual perception. His seminal book, Vision: A Computational Investigation into the Human Representation and Processing of Visual Information (MIT Press), published in 1982, introduced a three-level approach—computational theory, representation and algorithm, and hardware implementation—that remains foundational in computer vision and cognitive science. Tragically, Marr passed away in 1980 at the age of 35, but his ideas continue to influence fields from artificial intelligence to neuroscience, inspiring generations of researchers to bridge biology and computation in the quest to unravel the mysteries of the mind.
