Born in Europe and shaped by the devastation of the Holocaust, he devoted his career to studying the development, transmission, and interpretation of rabbinic tradition. His work engaged both classical sources and modern questions of faith, authority, suffering, and communal memory. Through his teaching and writing, Halivni influenced generations of scholars and readers, offering a deeply learned, critical, and humane approach to Jewish thought and the enduring challenges of theology after catastrophe.
