Dr. Agustín Stahl
About the Author
Dr. Agustín Stahl was a pioneering Puerto Rican physician, naturalist, and ethnographer whose multifaceted career bridged the sciences and humanities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1842 in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Stahl pursued medical studies in Germany before returning to his homeland, where he established a practice in Bayamón and immersed himself in documenting the island's rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. His expeditions across Puerto Rico yielded extensive collections of flora, fauna, and indigenous artifacts, contributing significantly to early anthropological knowledge. Stahl's scholarly pursuits extended to botany, with detailed studies on local plants, and archaeology, unearthing pre-Columbian relics. Despite political upheavals under Spanish and American rule, he remained dedicated to preserving Puerto Rican identity through his writings and illustrations. Dr. Stahl passed away in 1917, leaving a legacy as a foundational figure in Caribbean scholarship, celebrated for his rigorous, empathetic approach to indigenous histories and natural sciences.
