About the Author

Ella Deloria (1889–1971) was a pioneering Yankton Dakota scholar, ethnographer, and writer whose work bridged the worlds of Native American oral traditions and Western academia. Born on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, she grew up immersed in Lakota culture, learning the language and customs from her family, including her influential mother who was a descendant of a prominent chief. Deloria's education at All Saints School and subsequent studies in anthropology under Franz Boas at Columbia University equipped her to document and interpret Dakota life with authenticity and depth. Her seminal book, Speaking of Indians, offers an intimate portrayal of Sioux customs, values, and social structures, challenging stereotypes and providing invaluable insights into Indigenous perspectives. Throughout her career, Deloria collaborated on linguistic projects, taught, and advocated for Native voices, leaving a lasting legacy in Native American studies that continues to educate and inspire readers today.
