Fanny Trollope
About the Author
Frances Milton Trollope, known as Fanny Trollope (1779–1863), was a prolific English novelist, travel writer, and social critic whose sharp observations and satirical wit captured the nuances of 19th-century society. Born in Stoke Newington, she married Thomas Anthony Trollope and raised a family that included the renowned novelist Anthony Trollope. After financial setbacks, she embarked on an adventurous journey to the United States in 1827, where she spent several years documenting the cultural quirks and social customs of the young nation. Her experiences culminated in the candid and controversial travelogue Domestic Manners of the Americans (Penguin Classics), which offered a witty yet unflattering portrait of American life, sparking debates on both sides of the Atlantic. Trollope's subsequent works, including over 30 novels, explored themes of class, gender, and morality, establishing her as a bold voice in Victorian literature.
