Fred Wah is a distinguished Canadian poet, novelist, and cultural critic whose innovative work has profoundly shaped contemporary literature. Born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, in 1939 to a Chinese-Canadian father and Swedish mother, Wah's writing often explores themes of hybridity, identity, and the intersections of race, place, and language. His experimental approach blends prose, poetry, visual elements, and found texts, reflecting his deep engagement with conceptualism and multimedia forms. As a professor emeritus at the University of Calgary, Wah has influenced generations of writers through his teaching and editorial contributions, including co-editing influential anthologies.
