About the Author

歌川国貞 (Utagawa Kunisada), born in 1786 as Sumida Shōzō, was a prolific Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, renowned for his mastery in depicting beautiful women, kabuki actors, and scenes from literature and daily life. Apprenticed under the esteemed Utagawa Toyokuni I, Kunisada quickly rose to prominence, producing thousands of woodblock prints that captured the elegance and sensuality of 19th-century Japan. His innovative use of color and composition influenced generations of artists, blending traditional motifs with contemporary flair. Despite facing challenges during the turbulent Bakumatsu era, Kunisada's legacy endures through his intricate designs, including the celebrated series Kunisada’s Beauties of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, which reimagines the famous Tōkaidō route with graceful female figures. He passed away in 1865, leaving an indelible mark on Japanese art history.
