George Moses Horton, born into slavery in Northampton County, North Carolina, in 1797, emerged as one of the earliest African American poets to achieve widespread recognition during the antebellum period. Largely self-taught, he honed his craft by composing verses on love, nature, and freedom, often selling poems to University of North Carolina students for pocket money. His debut collection, Hope of Liberty, published in 1829, marked him as the first African American to earn income from writing poetry. Despite enduring the hardships of bondage until his emancipation in 1865, Horton's resilient spirit infused his work with profound emotion and eloquence. Later featured in influential anthologies like Black Nature: Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry, his legacy endures as a testament to the power of the human voice against oppression, inspiring generations of writers to explore themes of resilience and natural beauty.
