Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498) was a fiery Dominican friar and reformer whose impassioned sermons and writings profoundly influenced the religious and political landscape of Renaissance Florence. Born in Ferrara, he joined the Dominican order and rose to prominence through his vehement critiques of the corruption within the Catholic Church and the moral decay of Italian society, drawing inspiration from the prophecies of impending divine judgment. As prior of San Marco, Savonarola led a theocratic movement that briefly overthrew the Medici rule, instituting a republic grounded in Christian piety and austerity, including the infamous Bonfire of the Vanities. His works, such as A Guide to Righteous Living and Other Works, offer practical spiritual guidance and calls for repentance, blending theological depth with urgent moral exhortation. Excommunicated by Pope Alexander VI, Savonarola was ultimately executed for heresy, but his legacy endures as a symbol of zealous reform and resistance against secular excess.
