Hans Robert Jauss (1921–1997) was a pioneering German literary theorist and historian whose groundbreaking work reshaped the landscape of literary criticism in the twentieth century. Born in Thüringen, Germany, Jauss studied Romance languages and literature before serving in World War II, after which he pursued an academic career that took him to universities in Munich, Saarbrücken, and Konstanz, where he co-founded the influential Constance School of Reception Aesthetics.
