Hans Jenny (1892-1992) was a pioneering Swiss-American soil scientist whose groundbreaking work revolutionized the field of pedology, the scientific study of soils. Born in Basel, Switzerland, Jenny immigrated to the United States in 1917, where he earned his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and spent much of his career as a professor at Berkeley and later at the University of Missouri. Renowned for his quantitative approach to soil science, Jenny developed the influential 'state factor equation' that models soil formation as a function of climate, organisms, relief, parent material, and time. His seminal book, Factors of Soil Formation: A System of Quantitative Pedology (Dover Earth Science), remains a cornerstone text, offering a rigorous framework for understanding soil genesis and its ecological implications.
