Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a pioneering Swedish artist whose visionary work anticipated the abstractions of the 20th century, yet remained largely hidden from public view during her lifetime. Born in Stockholm to a naval family, she studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and co-founded the group 'The Five,' where she explored spiritualism and theosophy through collaborative séances and automatic drawing. Af Klint's oeuvre, comprising over 1,000 paintings, drawings, and writings, delved into cosmic themes, geometric forms, and the unseen forces of the universe, commissioned by a higher spiritual authority she believed guided her hand. Her series of abstract works, created between 1906 and 1920, boldly interpreted the mysteries of evolution, duality, and the divine feminine, influencing modern art while challenging conventional narratives of its history.
