Hugo Ball (1886-1927) was a pioneering German artist, writer, and performer best known as the founder of the Dada movement in Zurich during World War I. Rejecting the horrors of nationalism and mechanized warfare, Ball co-established the Cabaret Voltaire in 1916, a hub for avant-garde experimentation where poetry, sound art, and absurd theater challenged conventional aesthetics. His seminal work, Flight Out of Time: A Dada Diary (Documents of Twentieth-Century Art), chronicles this tumultuous period, offering intimate insights into the birth of Dada through diary entries, manifestos, and reflections on artistic rebellion. Ball's multifaceted career also encompassed philosophy, mysticism, and later Catholic spirituality, influencing surrealism and postmodernism.
