Born on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana, he earned a master's degree in anthropology from the University of Southern California, becoming the first member of his tribe to achieve such academic distinction. During World War II, Medicine Crow fulfilled the four criteria of a Crow war chief—touching an enemy, taking his weapon, leading a war party, and stealing a horse—making him the last person to do so. A prolific storyteller and advocate for Crow culture, he served as a tribal historian and ambassador, sharing his wisdom through lectures and writings until his passing at age 102.
