Julian Haynes Steward
About the Author
Julian Haynes Steward was an influential American anthropologist whose work reshaped the study of culture, environment, and social change. Best known for developing the concept of cultural ecology, he examined how societies adapt to their surroundings and how technology, subsistence, and organization interact. Steward conducted fieldwork among Indigenous communities in North and South America and made lasting contributions to anthropological theory, archaeology, and area studies. As editor of Handbook of South American Indians: Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Dept. of State as a project of the Interdepartmental Committee on Cultural and Scientific Cooperation, he helped establish a foundational reference for the region’s cultures and histories.
