Kosho Uchiyama
About the Author
Kosho Uchiyama was a renowned Japanese Zen Buddhist monk and teacher whose life was dedicated to the authentic transmission of Soto Zen practice in the modern world. Born in 1919, he trained under the guidance of Taiso Joshu Sasaki and later became the abbot of Antaiji, a temple he revitalized as a center for lay practitioners seeking zazen meditation without reliance on rituals or dogma. Uchiyama's teachings emphasized 'opening the hand of thought,' a direct approach to realizing the self beyond ego and delusion through everyday mindfulness. His writings, accessible yet profound, bridged traditional Zen wisdom with contemporary life, influencing countless students in Japan and the West until his passing in 1999. Through his work, he invited readers to embrace the simplicity and immediacy of true practice.
