About the Author

Nella Larsen was a pioneering African American author of the Harlem Renaissance, renowned for her incisive explorations of racial identity, class dynamics, and the complexities of passing in early 20th-century America. Born in Chicago in 1891 to a Danish mother and a Danish West Indian father, she drew from her own experiences of racial ambiguity to craft narratives that challenged societal norms and illuminated the psychological toll of prejudice. After working as a nurse and librarian, Larsen published her seminal novels Quicksand in 1928 and Passing in 1929, the latter a poignant tale of a light-skinned Black woman who assumes a white identity, only to confront devastating consequences. Though her literary output was brief, her work endures as a vital contribution to modernist literature, blending subtle psychological depth with social critique. Larsen passed away in 1964, leaving a legacy that continues to resonate in discussions of race and identity.
