Marcel Broodthaers was a pioneering Belgian artist, poet, and filmmaker whose multifaceted oeuvre blurred the boundaries between visual art, literature, and conceptual practice, emerging prominently in the 1960s and 1970s. Born in Brussels in 1924, he initially pursued poetry before transitioning to visual arts with his iconic 1964 casting of unsold copies of his poetry book in plaster, marking the birth of his Musée d'Art Moderne Département des Aigles—a fictional museum that satirized institutional art structures. Through installations, films, and objects, Broodthaers explored themes of language, commerce, and power, influencing generations of conceptual artists. He passed away in 1976, leaving a legacy that continues to challenge perceptions of authorship and originality in contemporary art.
