Mariano José de Larra (1809-1837) was a pioneering Spanish writer, journalist, and satirist whose sharp wit and incisive commentary illuminated the social and political shortcomings of 19th-century Spain. Born in Madrid, Larra adopted the pseudonym Fígaro to pen his famous articles, blending irony, humor, and profound critique to expose the absurdities of bureaucracy, class hypocrisy, and cultural stagnation in post-Napoleonic society. His essays, often published in periodicals like El Pobrecito Hablador, established him as a leading voice of Romanticism and costumbrismo, influencing generations of Spanish literature.
