About the Author
Nien Cheng was a Chinese writer and survivor of political persecution whose poignant memoir illuminates the harrowing realities of Maoist China. Born in Beijing in 1915 to a prominent family, she received an elite education in London before returning to serve as a diplomat's wife in Shanghai. During the Cultural Revolution, Cheng was imprisoned for six years on fabricated charges of espionage, enduring brutal interrogations and isolation that tested her unyielding spirit. Released in 1973 after her daughter's tragic death, she later emigrated to the United States, where she chronicled her experiences with unflinching honesty. Her writing, born from profound personal tragedy, offers a vital firsthand account of resilience amid ideological tyranny, resonating as a testament to human dignity.
