Peter Bol is a scholar of Chinese history whose work explores the intellectual, cultural, and social worlds of early and imperial China. With a particular interest in the history of ideas, education, and textual traditions, he examines how writers and communities shaped knowledge across changing historical periods. His scholarship brings together close reading, historical context, and attention to the institutions that sustained learning. Bol is the author of Ways with Words: Writing about Reading Texts from Early China (Studies on China) (Volume 24), a significant contribution to the study of reading, interpretation, and literary culture in early China.
