Robert Cawdrey
About the Author
Robert Cawdrey was an English schoolmaster and cleric whose pioneering work laid the foundation for modern English lexicography. Serving as a vicar in several parishes, he devoted himself to education and language reform during the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean periods. His most significant contribution came in 1604 with the publication of A Table Alphabeticall, widely recognized as the first monolingual English dictionary. This modest volume of roughly 2,500 words offered definitions for difficult terms drawn from Latin, Greek, and French, making them accessible to ordinary readers. Cawdrey's innovative approach to alphabetical ordering and plain-English explanations helped democratize knowledge and influenced subsequent dictionary makers for generations.
