St. Augustine; R. S. Pine-Coffin (Transl.)
About the Author
St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD), one of the most influential theologians and philosophers in Western Christianity, was born in Thagaste, present-day Algeria, to a pagan father and a Christian mother. His early life was marked by intellectual pursuits in rhetoric and philosophy, including a period of adherence to Manichaeism, before his dramatic conversion to Christianity in 386 AD under the influence of Bishop Ambrose of Milan. As Bishop of Hippo, Augustine authored numerous works that shaped Christian doctrine, including explorations of grace, original sin, and the nature of God. His masterpiece, Confessions, offers an introspective autobiographical account of his spiritual journey, blending personal narrative with profound theological reflection, and remains a cornerstone of Western literature and thought. Translated into English by R. S. Pine-Coffin, this edition brings Augustine's timeless wisdom to modern readers.
