Tuong Vu is a distinguished historian specializing in modern Southeast Asian history, with a particular focus on Vietnam's political and social transformations during the twentieth century. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago and is currently an associate professor at the University of Oregon, where he teaches courses on Asian politics and revolutionary movements. Vu's research explores the interplay between nationalism, colonialism, and state-building, drawing on extensive archival work in Vietnam, France, and the United States. His seminal book, Building a Republican Nation in Vietnam, 1920–1963 (Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University), offers a groundbreaking analysis of the republican era's ideological foundations and institutional developments, challenging conventional narratives of Vietnamese history. Through his scholarship, Vu illuminates the complexities of nation-building in postcolonial contexts, making significant contributions to the field of East Asian studies.
